We Fight Together: How Splenda and the ADA are Partnering for People with Diabetes

Splenda ADA Walk 2023

This American Diabetes Month®, we are excited to highlight our partnership with the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and celebrate our two organizations’ ongoing commitment to the diabetes community.

Our Missions

Since 1940, the ADA has worked to prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes . Diabetes care has changed significantly over the past 80 years with advancements in science and technology, but the organization’s mission has remained steadfast.

At Splenda, we are on a mission to help people with diabetes and prediabetes live happier, healthier, and longer lives by making it easier to reduce sugar. Our zero-calorie sweeteners and diabetes nutrition shakes ensure that people living with diabetes can continue to enjoy the sweet things in life, and we regularly provide educational resources to both consumers and health care professionals that feature practical tips for eating healthy and managing blood glucose.

The Impact of Food and Nutrition on Diabetes

Oftentimes one of the first questions a person asks after being diagnosed with type 1 or type 2 diabetes is, “What can I eat?” The thought of having to closely monitor your carbohydrate (carb) and sugar intake can be daunting, but it doesn’t mean you have to abandon the sweet things in life.

According to the ADA, a well-balanced diet can help manage weight, lower the risk of heart disease, manage blood sugar levels, and improve overall quality of life for those living with diabetes. By making diabetes friendly food choices, you can balance blood glucose and minimize the risk of complications, making the choice of foods, portion sizes, and the timing of meals critical considerations. Consuming excessive amounts of sugary foods can lead to elevated blood glucose over time and affect health outcomes, which is why Splenda’s portfolio of zero-calorie sweeteners is such a valuable tool to improve the overall quality of life for those impacted by diabetes.

The ADA has taken numerous steps to provide education and resources around healthy eating, food insecurity, recipes, and meal planning. From Diabetes Food Hub® to the Diabetes Plate Method, the organization promotes food and nutrition as not just a dietary choice; but a vital component of a person with diabetes’ daily life that can make a world of difference in their health journey.

Proud Partners

Given that diabetes and prediabetes affect so many of our loyal Splenda users, we proudly partner with the ADA to provide diabetes-friendly recipes and support the organization’s education and advocacy efforts. We know that access to information and guidance about nutrition is essential in preventing and managing diabetes, which is why we are a proud supporter of the ADA’s Diabetes Food Hub. Since the initiation of our partnership with the ADA, we have contributed over 60 recipes to Diabetes Food Hub that are specifically designed for individuals looking to manage their diabetes without having to sacrifice taste.

We also proudly support the ADA’s Kiss a Pig Gala, an annual fundraiser that raises money to fight and find a cure for diabetes. Until 1921, there was no treatment for diabetes, and it wasn’t until researchers discovered insulin in the pancreas of pigs that the lifesaving treatment was born. Now, insulin comes in many forms, from regular human insulin to ultra-rapid and ultra-long-acting insulin. The Kiss a Pig Gala honors pigs for saving countless lives and is the largest grossing and most attended charity gala in the state of Arkansas.
