Splenda® Brand: Read Between the Headlines Challenge

About the Contest:

Over 100 scientific studies representing 20+ years of research support the safety of sucralose. Independent health authorities support that sucralose can be used as part of a healthy diet. Despite this overwhelming body of evidence, consumers are constantly being bombarded by media headlines questioning the safety of low calorie sweeteners (LCS), like sucralose. The misinformation about LCS is often attributed to research that uses unconventional or poorly designed methods, draws conclusions that don’t match the research question or are erroneously drawn. At the Splenda® Brand, we stand against this junk science and enlist the help of like-minded experts.

This sponsored challenge inspires you to develop your own content that debunks junk science about LCS. Participants are encouraged to leverage the tips and best practices from the Today’s Dietitian webinar sponsored by Splenda® featuring Yvette d’Entremont, MS (aka SciBabe) and Keri Gans, MS, RDN, CDN, titled, “Read Between the Headlines.” During the webinar, Yvette and Keri discussed practical strategies for evaluating levels of evidence and parsing headlines to identify questionable sources, and provided tips for debunking junk science with creativity and humor. If you missed the webinar, watch it here for free. Participants of this challenge are encouraged, but not required to watch the webinar.

MYTH RATIONALE
Low-calorie sweeteners are not safe. Low-calorie sweetener cause cancer.
  • Sucralose has been the subject of extensive safety testing, backed by 20 years of research.
    • The FDA reviewed more than 110 safety studies in approving the use of sucralose. It was approved in the US nearly 20 years ago and has been used throughout the world by millions of people since 1991.
  • Fearmongering headlines questioning the safety can often distract from the overall collective body of evidence about sucralose and LCS.
  • Single studies (some which are not peer reviewed, only presented at conferences) reported as fact can be very confusing for consumers and can distract from the overall collective body of literature which shows that sucralose is safe to use.
  • Sucralose has been proven to be safe, with no link to cancer.
  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority, Health Canada, the World Health Organization and the U.S. National Cancer Institute support this conclusion.
  • According to the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society, studies of FDA-approved sweeteners have not shown a link to cancer in humans.

References:

Low-calorie sweeteners can contribute to diabetes.
  • Some NEGATIVE studies have shown that LCS, including Splenda®, can impact blood sugar levels and how the body processes it.
  • This rationale suggests that sucralose is treated by the body as a carbohydrate (carbohydrates produce the strongest blood sugar response of any nutrient).
  • Even though Splenda® starts with sugar, it goes through a process that changes it to a non-carbohydrate sweetener.
  • The body does not recognize Splenda® as a sugar nor does it cause sudden spikes in blood sugar levels.
  • Well-designed studies in humans have shown that Splenda® does not impact blood sugar levels or other markers of response to blood sugar management. Elevated blood sugar and impaired blood sugar maintenance are risk factors for development of diabetes.
  • Research supports that eating foods with LCS instead of sugar causes a lower blood glucose rise after their consumption compared to sugar-containing foods.

References:

Low-calorie sweeteners increase hunger and food intake, and/or cause you to crave sweets.

References:

Low-calorie sweeteners make you gain weight.
  • Isolated studies done in animals, cells or with study designs that can’t prove causation try to draw a link between weight gain and LCS use.
  • Premature conclusions made from isolated pieces of research do not take into consideration the overall evidence that says all approved LCS can be a useful tool to for weight loss plans and weight maintenance.
  • Other studies support that there is little evidence to conclude that LCS increase the risk of weight gain or obesity.
