Dear Current, Former, and Future SPLENDA® Users,
As I previously addressed in my letter to you dated March 18, 2016, I am pleased to announce that Monday, May 8, 2017 a panel of 24 European independent experts – including Ph.Ds, medical doctors, and scientists confirmed through the European Food Safety Authority that sucralose is safe and does not cause cancer and the research on sucralose conducted by the Ramazzini Institute was poorly designed and conducted and, hence, its conclusions are false.
In addition to the recent EFSA review, the safety of sucralose has been demonstrated by a wide body of research. The FDA and other regulatory agencies reviewed more than 110 scientific studies that have led to consistent conclusions that sucralose is safe, including for women who are pregnant or nursing and for children. SPLENDA® Sweeteners are a safe choice.
In the wake of this confirmation, consumers should expect the Center for Science in the Public Interest, (CSPI) to retract its previous position and do the right thing by consumers and reinstate their safety rating on sucralose. Instead, their actions reflect an irresponsible organization that ignores science and the plight of consumers that are attempting to safely manage their health. Consumers deserve to be confident in choosing alternative sweeteners like SPLENDA® to avoid the health risks associated with excess sugar consumption. Instead, they are confronted with misleading information from a group that says they serve the public interest.
Rather than rely on the science of this independent body of experts and scientists, CSPI clings to its prejudice. Consumers have long been hounded with myths of SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener causing cancer, or weight gain or any variety of ills. These myths are untrue, and proper use of science and information reveals this to be untrue. Rather than dispassionately performing its duty and employing expertise to aid consumers, CSPI adds its voice to false myths, unfounded rumor and unprofessionalism
Perhaps the Board of CSPI and anyone funding should assert its control and consider where its current leadership is taking it. In my opinion, CSPI has failed to follow its mission, forfeited the credibility of its rating system, and, instead, leans on scare tactics aimed at consumers for its own benefit and funding. You deserve better.
