Splenda® Calls for CSPI to act in the Public’s Interest and Return its Rating to SAFE

May 10, 2017

CARMEL, IN—May 10, 2017 — Every day millions of people safely use Splenda® to help them live a healthier lifestyle and reduce their sugar intake. These consumers deserve to feel confident in this choice.

By denying the latest decision from the European Food Safety Authority’s 24-member panel of Ph.D.s, medical doctors and scientists confirming sucralose is safe and does not cause cancer, CSPI is misleading consumers and not acting in the public’s interest.

CSPI should categorize Splenda® as safe instead of pointing fingers at others’ credibility and refusing to look in the mirror and admit that they got it wrong.

The bottom line is: It’s not what we say. It’s not what CSPI says. It’s what the science says. And the body of evidence clearly says: Splenda® is safe.

The science CSPI has used to worry consumers was dismissed by EFSA’s 24-member panel because this study, conducted by the Ramazzini Institute, was poorly designed and conducted and, hence, its conclusions are false.

In addition to the recent EFSA review, the safety of sucralose has been affirmed by a wide body of research. FDA and other regulatory agencies reviewed more than 110 scientific studies that meet the recommended research protocols set by expert health authorities for investigating the safety of a new food ingredient. Reviews of these studies have led to consistent conclusions that sucralose is safe, including for women who are pregnant or nursing and for children. Splenda® Sweeteners are a safe choice.

EFSA’s decision puts good science first, and it is consistent with the movement to bring greater scrutiny to poorly designed studies that draw false conclusions and unjustifiably alarm consumers. This is a topic we are particularly passionate about at Splenda®. We invite others to commit to evaluating research using rigorous scientific judgment and apply sound research findings before making recommendations or sharing opinions and we invite CSPI to do right by the public’s interest.
